Rauthiss sat there on the boulder outside of the forest. Looking back over his shoulder, he saw the house that he lived in and smiled. As much as his family might annoy him, they all knew that "I'm going outside to think" meant "I want to be alone", and they respected that. He leaned back and stretched, contouring his spine to the curve of the rock. He felt the tendons of his arms stretch and the bones of his neck pop. There, looking up at the stars, he laid and thought, letting the soft caress of his memories remove his mind from the body he was currently in.
Slowly, softly, He drifted back in time to that morning. He felt himself shifting in his chair in math class, bored to death by his lackluster teacher. He sighed and went back to work programming his calculator - nobody ever accused him of being amazed by math; it was well known that that was his best skill. Having finished most of the program in AP World, he was just closing loops and adding finishing comments now. It was boring work, but very preferable to the constant answer-providing his math class was usually full of. Being incredibly smart for his age had a couple of downsides...but he lived with them. The scene blurred.
This time, Rauthiss found himself sitting in front of a table, a pair of dice in his hand. He laughed at the results - a natural one. Just his luck. Ah, well. It could have been worse. this time, he only took a couple damage from a failed reflex save and fell prone. Not too bad, considering. The sheer irony of the situation made him laugh, as the character reminded him of himself. His little kobold cleric did have a lot in common with him - a love of alchemy/chemistry, skill at jumping, tumbling, swimming, and acrobatics, a slim, lithe body, even the alignment matched Rauthiss' well: Chaotic Neutral. And finally, the icing on the top of the cake, his...
Rauthiss shivered. The wind was blowing, and it had aroused him from his dreamlike state. He sat up and stretched his back again. It was one of the odd things about being human. He could stretch all he wanted, but he still felt like he needed to; that his body was too small. He stretched his wings and tail, noting the odd sensation of stretching something that wasn't there...and feeling it stretch. Yes, being a dragon in a human body had it's disadvantages...but the joy of knowing was indescribable.
He closed his eyes and felt the energy around him. A tingle ran up his spine as the energy flowed through him. Concentrating on focusing it into his right hand, he gracefully traced a simple symbol into the air; one that he had attuned to fire-specific energy. He felt a blanket of warmth cover him. Whether it was real warmth or just a mental perception of such, it still took the edge of off the cold....which was good enough for him. He sighed and leaned back again, letting memories flow into his head once more...memories of a more draconic bent.
Wings snapped open, a flash of pink dove by, and the wind beneath his wings led Rauthiss into a dive after his bodymate, Teyshara. It wasn't often that he and his mate were able to get away from the tribe and just fly around. Rauthiss snatched his lover's tail and dragged her into the water below along with him. He surfaced with a mocking grin on his face, followed by a surprised yelp as Teyshara kicked his stomach underwater. Laughing, she paddled over and gave him a quick lick. "Got you." Rauthiss responded by working some of his favorite magic - ice. Sealing Teyshara's bottom half into a block of ice, he swam away. "Nice try, but not enough" he responded as he swam towards the shore.
Walking into the cave that he called his own, Rauthiss crawled his way into his corner and plopped himself down. He was about to get to sleep when he heard a voice in his head. "Rau! We've got a cut out here!" Sighing, Rauthiss got to his feet and walked back out again. With a thought, he sent a message back to his mindmate, his close friend whom he shared a mental link with. "Ugh. Not again." Zakarthix's typical brown, gracefully curved head peeking into Rauthiss' mind. "Yep." Rauthiss leapt off of the cliff that held his cave and glided down to help the injured dragon. As good with energy as he was, it was a real pain to help everybody sometimes.
Rateyshi padded into the clearing where Rauthiss slept, nudging him softly. "Rauthiss? Teyshara sent me. You fell asleep after healing Zemerinth." Rauthiss raised his head and looked at his child. "Oh? Sorry about that. I got very tired....but I think I'll be fine now." Rateyshi laughed. "Only you, Rau. Too bad you can't fly home with all these trees around." "Eh, I'll manage" Rauthiss murmured a string of abstract syllables and released the energy he had stored. Cells began to liquefy, magic restructuring their form and their function. Slowly, the familiar, ice blue form of Rauthiss disappeared, leaving an olive green dragon, sinuous and slim in it's form, standing in it's place. Rateyshi looked at the 3 revealing features that told him it was the same dragon- The ice-blue eyes, the pink scale in the middle of his chest, and the sigil that Rauthiss had mentally carved on the tip of his tail - 2 runes spelling his name. Rateyshi laughed to himself as his parent leaped into the forest, his body twisting with sinuous grace. As absent-minded as his father might seem, he always had something up his sleeve, so to speak. He loped off after Rauthiss.
The storm raged around him. It was a struggle for Rauthiss to even stay aloft in a storm of such mystic magnitude. He had an odd feeling; like this was going to be his last time fighting for a while. He laughed off the notion and snapped into his battle focus. Seeing a shadow in front of him, he dove, calling up the energy and enclosing his claws in ice. He felt the small bump as the spires of ice pierced his opponent's scales, the grinding as they dug in, the sudden warmth as the crimson blood of his opponent poured over his paws. He looked up and saw his opponent's final look of surprise and horror, etched upon his face in death. Rauthiss pulled back what energy he could, as the storm started to fade. He saw as a rival tribe fled, their magical storm broken by his slaying of their leader. As the adrenaline stopped beating so swiftly in his veins, Rauthiss felt faint. Looking down, he realized how injured he had been - slashes across his stomach, slices across his shoulders. His life mostly spent, Rauthiss dropped to the ground.
He found himself floating. Opening his eyes, Rauthiss realized that this wasn't his world. He was surrounded by a dark gray mist, with white stone underneath him. He looked around and saw 3 dragons around him: Teyshara, Zakarthix, and Rateyshi. "What happened?" he said. Teyshara turned to him and replied. "Rauthiss....you and me....we're dead. For the moment." Rauthiss gasped. "How do you mean?" This time, Zakarthix answered. "You two were hurt. A lot. We had to remove you and let the body heal itself. As we speak, most of your energy is healing your body...but it's going to be a long time. We've discussed it, and we've decided that you're free to do whatever you will. We'll await your return." Rauthiss sat there, dumbfounded. Rateyshi spoke up. "Rauthiss, perhaps you could do that idea you've been talking about. You know...incarnating as something else." "Thanks, all of you. I'll see you as soon as I can manage it. Be back soon." Rauthiss said as he turned around and walked into the mists.
He couldn't tell how long he had wandered through those gray mists until he found them. Those lines of truth, showing him the birth of human babes and the circumstances surrounding them. Rauthiss looked at these strings, ropes, lines of fate until he found one that he was pleased with. He reached forward and touched it, joining his essence with the body of a future human child. he closed his eyes, placed the binds, and left his bodiless existence, not knowing that he would forget himself...and find himself again.
Rauthiss' eyes snapped open as he heard his father's whistling. He sat up and replied to his human father, "I'm coming, Dad!" Hopping off of the boulder with the same acrobatic grace that he always moved with, Rauthiss walked back to his house. Yes, it was nice to remember... but it does not do to dwell in times past. Eric ran across the field back to his house, his life, and his (temporary) humanity.
